Guidelines for Baptism of Infants

These guidelines are to help you plan for your child’s baptism. Please read them over carefully. If you have any questions, please call the parish office at 414-321-1965.

Policies for the Baptism of Infants

  • Parents, godparents, family, and guests are invited to attend the 10:30 a.m. Mass before the baptism.
  • Arrangements for a different day and time can be made based on the reasonable needs of the parents and/or godparents.
  • Baptisms usually take place on the third Sunday of the month, after the 10:30 a.m. Mass, around 11:45 a.m.

Requirements for Baptism

Parish Membership: At least one parent of the child must be a registered parish member. If you are not presently registered, registration can be done as part of the preparation for your child’s baptism.

Non-Parishioners: Baptism of non-parishioners may be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist. Parents must be members of another Catholic parish, present a letter of permission from their pastor, and attend the baptismal preparation sessions at their parish or at

St. John the Evangelist.

Sponsors: Parents traditionally pick two godparents (one male and one female), but only one is required. One godparent must be at least 16 years old and a practicing Catholic who has received the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation).

Baptism Class: Before their first child's baptism, parents must attend a baptism preparation session. Sponsors are strongly encouraged to attend. Please call the parish office to set up an appointment. (414) 321-1965.

Fees: No minimum parish contribution or baptismal fee is required. A separate donation in the amount of $10 to the parish at the time of your child’s baptism is greatly appreciated.

Be prepared for your baby’s needs: bring a bottle, diapers, a pacifier, and any other essentials.
