Adult Education
Opportunities for faith sharing, prayer, spiritual development and increasing personal knowledge of our faith are provided. Large group events are offered on an occasional basis. Small groups meet for scripture study and prayer more regularly. The planning committee is always open to new ideas and new members.

Athletic Association
The Athletic Association organizes athletic programs for the School and Religious Education program. The following sports are offered: soccer for boys and girls from Kindergarten through eighth grade; girls' volleyball; and boys' and girls' basketball and track.

St. John participates in volleyball and basketball through the Parkview Parochial League; soccer through the Southwest Catholic Soccer League which is played on St. John's athletic field; and track through the Catholic Youth Track Association.

Our fees are a one-time family fee of $25.00 and $20.00 per athlete per year. We keep our fees low because our parents help to staff Bingo and our concession stands during soccer, volleyball and basketball games.

Signups are held in May of each year for the following school year.

Art Club
The Art Club was founded in 1974 by Mr. Charles Versh. Its main goal is to foster creativity and enjoyment through art activities in a social setting.

Informal meetings are held every Tuesday from 7:00 to 10:00 pm. Each member is required to provide his or her own supplies. There are no dues. Most art work is done in oil, acrylic, watercolor or pastels.

The group also include woodcarvers. They meet with us every other week. New members for either group are welcome at any time. This is a great opportunity to meet and work with other creative artists. Anyone, high school age and older, is encouraged to join.

CF&E - Christian Formation and Education
Christian Formation and Education is a lifelong process aimed at personal conversion and growth in faith. The purpose of the Committee is to help the Parish develop an understanding of its responsibility for the total educational mission of the Church. This committee is advisory to educational administrators and makes recommendations to the Parish Council regarding all aspects of this mission: Sacramental preparation, adult, young adult, family ministry, youth ministry, school and child ministry. Its members include: Chairperson, Parish Council Member-at-large, School Principal, Director of Religious Education, Directory of Youth Ministry, Assistant Athletic Director, President of Home and School Association and Adult Education Coordinator.

Choir
All Souls: This choir is called upon to represent the Community at St. John the Evangelist in the Funeral Mass of the deceased and to assist in the family's healing through songs requested.

Children's Choir: This group is made up of K - 2, 3 - 5, 6 - 8 graders and our religious education children. Each group practices a half hour on a designated day after school and sings for a weekday School Mass, one Sunday Mass a month at 10:00 am and First Holy Communion. There are summer choir camps throughout June, July and August. Choir membership at present: 78 members.

Slovenian: The Slovenian Choir has been in existence for many years. Under the leadership of several directors, they have been and still are a dedicated group of singers. They sing for the 8:45 am Mass each Sunday and attend rehearsals regularly. They have performed for many special services and have combined with the St. Cecilia Choir for special occasions.

Some of the same people who sang with the choir in the old church, 9th and Mineral Streets, are still members today and love raising their voices in praise of our God. We encourage new members, and please note that you do not have to speak Slovenian to join this group.

St. Cecilia: Formed in 1989, we are presently 15 voices. The choir sings for the 10:00 Mass three Sundays of the Month and one 5:00 pm Mass on Saturday. We rehearse on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. We participate in Confirmation, Christmas and Triduum Liturgies, as well as Parish functions.

Christian Women
Christian Women is a dedicated group of women who attend Mass, work and socialize together. Originally named "Christian Mothers", our members include all practicing Catholic women who wish to join.

Meetings are held the second Thursday of every month, September through June, except January. They begin at 6:30 pm, often with a Mass, and are followed with a social. Refreshments are served. The annual dues are $3.00.

The Christian Women are in charge of the harvest craft fair and a spring rummage sale. Proceeds are used to purchase needed items for the church and school or are donated to various charitable organizations voted on by the members.

Confirmation Grades 11-12
Confirmation is celebrated in the junior year. Prerequisite includes four semesters of religious education that may be accomplished by attending a Catholic High School, the Parish Religious Education program, or by making arrangements for individual home study with the Youth Minister. It is a year long program that includes an initial parent/candidate meeting in May. "Readiness" steps are outlined and may be worked on over the summer months. Formal classes begin in the fall and are held the odd Wednesday evenings of the month for six months. Several service projects are required as well as a weekend retreat. Sponsors are encouraged to participate.

Elder Ministry
Members of St. John's Elder Ministry visit parishioners who are residing in nursing homes. Such visits are living proof that the patients have not been forgotten by the parish.

Institutions do not notify the parish office when someone enters their facility. It is necessary to rely on referrals from family, friends or neighbors.

If you know of a parishioner who is now a resident of a nursing home or is a shut-in, simply contact the parish office at 321-1965 with that information. Elder Ministry will follow up on your referral.

Holy Name Society
The Holy Name Society is a group of men who strive to promote the individual sanctification of each member. Activities include religious and social services to the parish, as well as fund raising at certain times of the year. The group meets on the second Sunday of each month, beginning with the 7:30 am Mass, followed by breakfast and a meeting or entertainment. Men, 16 years and over, make up this group.

Home & School Association
The Home and School Association is an organization for communication between parents and teachers. It also sponsors fund-raisers and events to help defray the cost of tuition and other school expenses. The Association Board consists of the Pastor, Principal and four elected officers: president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer.

Currently, the Home and School Association sponsors bingo twice monthly, a calendar raffle, Gold C and Entertainment Book sales, and a Market Day Food Co-op. In addition, regular meetings are held in September, January and May of each school year. There is no membership fee.

K.S.K.J.
The American Slovenian Catholic Union is a fraternal life insurance and annuity company which focuses on fraternal and social activities. K.S.K.J. was organized in 1894 and recently celebrated its 100th jubilee.

In January of 1903, a local lodge of K.S.K.J., St. John's #65 was established. Thirteen years later, St. John the Evangelist Parish was named after this lodge. In those days, its members were mostly parishioners dedicated to helping one another in need. We now boast a membership of over 600.

Our lodge meets monthly in a rectory meeting room and plans many events for its members. We sponsor basketball, bowling, golf and other sports as well as an annual Christmas party for our members. We also have a scholarship program for our young people.

Parish Council
The Parish Council is a vehicle for fulfilling the pastoral mission of the Parish by nourishing growth in the Parish family, by the sharing of spiritual gifts and talents and by encouraging quality relationships among all members of the Parish and between the Parish and community. They are involved in the planning, operating, maintaining and financing of the Parish with a strong basis in stewardship. The Council initiates and supports those activities and programs that foster the spiritual, intellectual, moral and temporal well-being of the Parish.

Perpetual Adoration
During His agony in the Garden of Gethsemani, Jesus asked His disciples, "Could you not watch one hour with me?" Members of our around-the-clock, ongoing, Perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament say "Yes". Perpetual Adoration gives honor to our Lord, strengthens one's own spiritual life and provides a means to pray for personal intentions.

Many people schedule a particular hour each week to spend in church. The south door of the church is always open. The opportunity for others is given to drop in at any time and sign in at the register.

Won't you spend one hour a week adoring Jesus? He will spend eternity thanking you.

RCIA and Adult Confirmation
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process by which adults who are not baptized, are baptized in another religion, or have not received all of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation) prepare for the reception of the sacraments. Through instruction, prayer and participation in the liturgical life of the church, participants experience the faith community, the richness of the Catholic tradition and ultimately the sacramental life of the church at the Easter Vigil Service. Formal preparation begins in the fall, but prospective participants are welcome to inquire at any point during the year. Special classes are also held for practicing adult Catholics who have not received the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Right to Life
The Right to Life Committee was formed in early 1984. They have had, though the years, a relative small, yet steadily growing and very dedicated membership. The Rosary for Life is prayed on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 7:00pm in the Church. All are welcomed to come and pray with us for the end to abortion.

On Respect Life Sunday, we gather for the Life Chain. This event has shown a marked increase in participation over the years. We dedicate ourselves to the sanctity of ALL human life, and try to give public witness to that belief whenever possible.
